Start up weekend

Accra, Ghana, last weekend saw its first Start up Weekend, which was held at MEST from Friday 18th to Sunday 20th Nov, 2011.

Start up weekend is described as an intense 54 hour event which focuses on building a web or mobile application which could form the basis of a credible business over the course of a weekend. The weekend brings together people with different skillsets – primarily software developers, graphics designers and business people – to build applications and develop a commercial case around them.

At the end of the event, Dropify, emerged as the winner. The event was graced by the presence of many prominent people among them Mr. Ekow Spio-Garbrah.

It is really exciting times for Tech enthusiasts, entrepreneurs and young people in general as events such as these provide platforms for growth, development, innovation and even for discovery. For young people, it gives them opportunities for them to use their skills and talents to solve the unemployment problem faced by many of them. For tech enthusiasts and entrepreneurs, events like the Start up Weekend serves as a place for them to showcase their products and ideas, meet other talented colleagues, meet angel and venture capital firms etc.

This event is just one of the many tech/entrepreneurship events that have been held in Ghana this year, and if this is anything to go by, the Ghanaian tech/entrepreneurial scene will become very vibrant in the very near future and we all better be prepared.
